As humanitarian funding declines and access to land decreases, entrepreneurship has become central to refugee self-reliance in Uganda. But how viable are refugee businesses in reality?
This research brief explores the state of entrepreneurship in Kiryandongo Refugee Settlement, drawing on interviews with over 80 refugees, host community members, and aid workers. It highlights the challenges of operating in a demand-constrained environment, the impact of reduced aid, rising education costs, market saturation, and what truly enables refugee enterprises to survive and grow.
The findings offer critical insights and practical recommendations for donors, policymakers, and development actors working on livelihoods and economic inclusion.
