When you walk into the African Youth Action Network (AYAN) Centre in Kiryandongo Refugee Settlement, you’ll likely be greeted by a warm smile, a firm handshake, and the reassuring presence of a man who takes safety and community to heart. That man is Oyira Roberto, AYAN’s dedicated Security Officer, and one of the many unsung heroes who keep our spaces safe, welcoming, and full of life.
From Hustling to Purpose
Before joining AYAN, Roberto’s life was a series of “hustles.” He drove cars part-time, worked construction, and even rode boda bodas—always chasing the next opportunity, but never finding stability.
“The money you get comes on and off,” he recalls, “but it was not enough to help me save or grow.”
What drew him to AYAN was more than just a job—it was a chance to transform his life, gain skills, and discover purpose in service.
“I needed my life to change and develop,” he says. And change, it has.
More Than Security
Ask Roberto what a typical day looks like and you’ll quickly learn that his role goes far beyond guarding gates. He keeps the Centre safe and the compound clean, supports staff whenever needed, and even teaches the community about clean cookstoves. On other days, you’ll find him riding a motorcycle to deliver tasks, or rallying children on the field with a football at his feet.
What most people don’t realize? Security is not just about strength—it’s about people.
“In my job, you need to be friendly with everyone,” Roberto explains. “How you welcome people matters a lot.”
The Pride of Play
Of all his contributions, Roberto beams most when talking about the children. As a football enthusiast, he has taken it upon himself to coach the youth in sports.
“Now many children love our place because of how I’m taking care of them,” he shares proudly. “Mostly in sports, because I’m a good player and I’m training them too.”
In these small yet powerful acts—guarding, guiding, coaching—Roberto embodies AYAN’s mission: creating safe, nurturing spaces where young people can thrive.
Lessons from Roberto
When asked what message he would share with young people, Roberto’s answer is simple yet profound:
“Respect is the key to success.”
It’s a value he carries in every role—whether securing the Center, supporting his team, or dreaming about the future. His ultimate goal? To one day start his own business, support his family, and give back to others in need.
And when he’s not working? Don’t be surprised to find him singing or dribbling a ball—hidden talents that keep his spirit alive.
Why Roberto Inspires Us
Roberto’s journey reminds us that impact doesn’t always wear a suit or sit in a boardroom. Sometimes, it wears a security uniform, carries a whistle, and sings while guarding the gate. His story is proof that every role in AYAN is woven into the bigger mission—uplifting communities, empowering youth, and building a brighter future together.
